Thursday Temptation: Protein Shake

While we're working out, we put our muscles through a lot of hard work. Either doing cardio, weight training, or even yoga, our muscles are being put to the test as we try out new workouts. After a workout, it is important to feed our muscles with protein so that they can heal the "micro-tears" we create in our muscle tissues during intense contraction.

Of course, the best way to get your protein is through solid foods. However, I'm sure everyone can agree that it is very hard to try to consume that much protein in just solid foods; trust me, I've tried. Being a full-time mom and wife, I don't have the time to be cooking all day just to provide my body with 52 grams of protein (suggested amount for my weight). It may not sound like a lot but it is. The way I consume the missing protein I don't get through my daily meals is through my protein shakes.

**Calculate your suggested protein intake: 0.36g x your bodyweight= Total grams of protein**

The best protein shakes you can drink are the ones that are made with whey protein. Because it takes longer for solid food to breakdown the proteins and send them to your muscles, it's much faster to drink a protein shake that takes only 30 minutes to get to the proper muscles.

Choosing Your Protein:

Build Muscle: Look for a drink that has a bit more protein.

Endurance Athlete: Look for a drink that has a little more carbs.

Lose Body Fat: Look for a drink that is MAINLY protein, less carbs, and very low on fat.

In the end, the drink you get should be more than 50% protein!

Some protein shakes can be very bland tasting. Below are a few pictures of how I make my protein shake taste delicious, but still keeping it healthy.

There you have it, a great shake that'll boost your muscle function and recovery. Tastes as good as ice cream, but without the guilt! Let us know if you like this recipe. Also, if you have some shake mixtures of your own that you would like to share, we'd love to hear from you!
