1. How did you choose your career?
I personally never thought I would become a makeup artist and a model. I did not start wearing makeup until the 10th grade, and even then I wasn’t too fond of the products. Now I can’t live without some of my key products, like mascara. It wasn’t until I was in college that I realized makeup was a passion of mine.
Although I loved makeup, I did not have money to attend cosmetic courses so I started practicing on myself and on other people using the techniques I found on YouTube. I literally woke up and went to sleep watching makeup videos. I did not let my financial status stop me from my passion. Now I do makeup for different events.
Modeling is another career field I never thought I would be doing. As a kid, I was your typical brace face, band geek, and honors student. I never really saw myself as “pretty”. I never knew that my awkwardly tall frame, and long legs could ever come in handy.
When I finished high school, I began getting scouted by modeling agencies. There has been many times where I honestly thought I was going to fail, but my mom has been a huge part my ability to keep pushing forward. She constantly encourages me to build myself.
Although makeup and modeling are things I definitely love doing, I am also attending California State University, Los Angeles with a major in Public Health and a minor in developmental disabilities. My goal is to work with disabled children in a school environment. I am a very driven person, with a lot of ambitions. It is difficult to do all this at once, but with passion and commitment, anything is possible.
2. In your opinion, what would you say are the top three characteristics/traits to be successful in your career?
I believe to be successful in any career the top three characteristics are passion, patience, and self-confidence.
3. What do you find most rewarding about your career?
What I love about doing makeup is the confidence and happiness you give someone when you’ve made them up. Although cosmetics should not be used to hide a person’s face, it can be used to enhance the beautiful features they already have. I love helping people, and I enjoy making them happy. With modeling, while I now love the feeling of being in front of a camera, I also really enjoy inspiring people; I believe that’s the greatest reward of all.
4. How would you rate your income?
Right now I am not doing makeup and modeling so much for the income but rather for the experience and exposure. If you expect to gain a lot of money in the beginning, you need to rethink your career choice. In this field you need to invest time, then make money.
5. Is this what you always wanted? If not, how did you land into it?
I never thought of myself as doing this when I was growing up, but after high school, I entered a stage of change that led me to this, and I’m really glad it did.
6. What is your background? Did you have to go to school for what you are doing?
I did not go to school for makeup, I am 100% self-taught, but I did take a short modeling course. My mom made this one of my birthday presents because I was a really shy girl and she believed I needed a little boost.
7. What is the best piece of advice you can give to someone who wants to be in your field?
The best piece of advice I can tell someone is to be patient. Rewards don’t come right away, and you may fall and stumble throughout your path, but you need to pick yourself up and keep going. There will be many people who try to keep you down, but you need to have the determination and self-confidence that you can do anything you set your mind to.
8. Being a busy woman, what do you like to do on your free time?
On my free time I really enjoy spending time with my loved ones. All week I’m either at school or working, so when I have free time I try to spend it with my loved ones. Quality family time is important.
9. What do you value most in a career? Ex. Money, fun, work life balance?
I value the expression you are able to give in both careers, although it is a lot of work, it is also so much fun.
10. Do you have any other goals you strive to achieve?
Other than makeup and modeling, I also highly enjoy working with children. I am working hard at the moment to soon have a career working with children, mainly disabled children.
11. What is the greatest lesson you have learned? What would you do differently if given a second chance?
The greatest lesson I have learned is to never take negative comments too deeply. There are always going to be people who are going to give you a hard time. Like Dita Von Teese once said, “You can be the ripest, Juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches.” If I could do things differently, I would definitely follow my own advice. There were so many times I was ready to give up because of horrible comments from people I once called “friends” and even from people I have never even met. I constantly had to remind myself that I was worth it, and that I was capable despite what they said.
12. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years I either see myself being a celebrity makeup artist, a model for a well known company, or working in special education, or maybe all three. The sky is the limit right?
